Home Invasion Robbery Alert! Assault: July 9 in 2100 Block of Pelham
West Los Angeles Serial Robber Being Sought! 9 Homes in Area Have Now Been Hit!
Be a good neighbor . . . In light of this string of home-invasion robberies which seem to be
targeting older residents, please share the following message with your neighbors, especially
those who may not have internet access.
We need to be observant of our surroundings. Someone is staking out our community.
If you know older persons on your block, perhaps living alone, it may be helpful to
contact them, give them your phone number, check occasionally to see if they are okay.
A man accused of robbing nine homes in the WLA area during the past five weeks is being sought by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).
The bandit is targeting older female victims. The robberies have occurred during the late-night and early-morning hours. According to investigators the suspect
enters the home through a window wearing dark clothing, a ski-mask and gloves. He has used an implement to pry open windows. He then awakens the
victim and demands money and jewelry, and requires the victim to follow him around the house to identify where valuables are stored.
The following homes were recently robbed:
May 31, 2008 3:30 a.m. 2200 block of Patricia Avenue
June 4, 2008 5:00 a.m. 10500 block of Cushdon Avenue
June 7, 2008 2:00 a.m. 1700 block of Bundy Avenue
June 14, 2008 3:50 a.m. 2500 block of Kelton Avenue
June 18, 2008 2:50 a.m. 2700 block of Manning Avenue
June 30, 2008 3:00 a.m. 2300 block of Parnell Avenue
Not reported to LAPD 2300 block of Parnell Avenue
July 1, 2008 3:00 a.m. 2300 Manning Avenue
July 9, 2008 3:20 a.m. 2100 Pelham Avenue
In the most recent incident he threatened the victim with a gun.
The suspect is described as a male Black between 25 - 35 years of age. He stands about 6 feet tall and weighs between 200 - 220 lbs.
This is being investigated by the Robbery and Homicide Division. The Police are taking these incidents very seriously, and are pursuing
multiple lines of investigation, including forensics and common treads among the victims.
In light of this recent string of robberies, it is more important than ever that senior citizens take precautions, lock doors and windows,
use alarm systems, and increase outdoor lighting to deter burglars, and contact law enforcement regarding any suspicious activity,
In addition to those safety precautions, the LAPD encourages community members to photograph and engrave their valuables,
such as jewelry, silverware, and artwork, to use as an identifying tool.
The LAPD recommends all homeowners take the following home invasion prevention measures:
Install a Burglar Alarm Alarm switches should be at multiple locations, and you should be familiar with use and location of system.
Place digital color surveillance camera/recorder system throughout your residence. Replace videos regularly.
Install infra-red cameras covering outside areas and secure them out-of-view.
Keep Your Residence Well-Lit inside and outside.
Stay alert! Know who is near your residence.
All neighbors should be vigilant Observe surroundings while entering/exiting neighborhood, taking out trash, etc.
Keep doors and windows locked.
Report all suspicious activity to the Police. Write down suspicious suspect/vehicle descriptions.
Do not resist robbery suspects. Cooperate and comply with all demands. Be a good witness.
After a robbery, call 911 immediately. Don't waste a minute. Lock the doors, write down everything about crime, suspect, vehicle.
Do not chase or follow the robber. Leave the job of apprehending suspects to the Police.

updated June 18, 2008
This is the story of my next door neighbor’s robbery on Saturday morning, June 14, 2008. At approximately 3:30 a.m., my neighbor heard noise and thought someone was fooling around with her other next door neighbor’s car. She got up and turned on her front porch light, then went back to bed. A man about 25 years old, about 6 feet tall and weighing about 200 pounds with a sturdy build, appeared in her bedroom doorway. He wore a black ski mask that showed only his eyes and nose, and wore knit gloves with Velcro closings. His shoes were black and shiny, like patent leather. He had a flashlight. He had come in through the very small, high bathroom window in the back of her house. The window was open. He had taken the top off her bird bath and used the pedestal to get to the window.
She started to scream. He shoved her down on the bed, straddled her, put his hand over her mouth, and told her if she didn’t stop struggling and screaming he would kill her. He told her to get up and follow him. As he went through each room in the house, he periodically shined the flashlight on her feet behind him to make sure she was still there. The robber was looking for jewelry, silver, and money. My neighbor kept telling him she didn’t have any of those things. She followed him around the house for at least ½ hour to 45 minutes. He looked at “absolutely everything.” He went methodically through every drawer, shelf, the refrigerator, and the freezer. He asked where he cash was and she told him it was in her fanny pack. He asked her to lead him to it. He took the $30 and change that was in it, plus the fanny pack. He also took another fanny pack she had.
After he was through casing the house, he told her to sit on the bed and “Wait at least 15 minutes or I’ll kill you.” He ripped the phone receiver out and took it with him so she couldn’t call the police. He went out the front door. She waited at least 10 minutes. (She didn’t come out right away because she could hear him shuffling outside the door for several minutes before he left.) She then went across the street to wake the neighbors up and call the police. The police arrived while she was still talking to the dispatcher. The police were very thorough and checked nearby homes for evidence of other burglaries or robberies. They did get two footprints from the window sill and the top of the toilet.
My neighbor said the man was obviously a professional; he had no accent, seemed well educated, and didn’t use vernacular or slang words. She couldn’t identify a particular ethnicity--only that his eyes were brown. His manner was cool and calming. By the time she followed him around the house, she was experiencing anger, not fear. Her only injury was a swollen upper lip which occurred when his hand rubbed across her mouth as she was trying to scream. She was VERY lucky.
Please be aware that burglars and robbers can get through windows that are only large enough to fit their heads.
---
during a recent WNC meeting, Captain Eaton mentioned that these thieves tend to target elderly residents. many folks feel they need to answer the door when the doorbell rings.
Please be careful and don't just open your door to ANY stranger!

The thieves are still active.
there were more auto break-ins on Tilden (our neighbors to the west. here is a reminder from the LAPD:
Burglary Theft from Motor Vehicle Alert!
Burglary theft from Motor Vehicles (Car break ins) have been on the rise throughout the West Los Angeles Area. Burglary Theft from Motor Vehicle is the highest crime in the West Los Angeles area. This is due to very valuable and expensive personal property being left inside unattended vehicles.
An automobile is not a safe or secure place to leave any valuables whether locked or unlocked. If any property is left unattended in the car even for just a few minutes IT WILL BE STOLEN! Even something as simple as a small sun glass case, an empty backpack or gym bag will cause your car window to be smashed resulting in hundreds of dollars in damage alone.
Car burglars are taking a variety of small expensive electronics and valuables. The top items being taken in most car burglaries is portable GPS systems, IPODS, cellular telephones, lap top computers, purses, wallets and money.
The West Los Angeles Area continues to be a target rich environment. Based on the history and information from arrests that have been made we know we have a variety of car burglars that travel to the west side of Los Angeles to commit their crimes. Although many arrests have been made the crimes continue to occur. This tells us there are numerous suspects that are targeting the area.
The Los Angeles Police Department is making every effort to combat this problem. Community awareness and involvement is instrumental in the prevention of these crimes.
If car burglars do not find valuable property inside cars eventually they will seek out other areas to commit their crimes. Please do not leave ANY personal property visible in the car!

Seven cars were broken into adjacent to each other on Midvale Ave close to Coventry. The cars with an alarm system were not broken. All of the cars that were vandalized had no alarms. All of the windows that were broken were in the rear.
They took car batteries, radios and anything that was in the trunk of value. One of the neighbors saw the vandals as he was leaving his home at about 4:30 am and scared them off. They left a pile of things under a bush before they ran off, including some of the car batteries and a baby stroller and other items that they had taken out of the cars.
a blue knit glove on the ground was found and another neighbor found another glove in his car…the police arrived about 6:30 AM
They took photos and a report from one of the neighbors. They did not want to take fingerprints because they said it would be pointless.
This all happened very close to the house that was invaded by the SWAT team the other day (May 15, 2008).

Update for Jan. 9, 2008
Crime Alert
-----------
There has been an increase in "distraction" burglaries on the Westside. We have also seen an increase in door-to-door "charity" seekers which have been roaming the area. Some have been doing research and have started using the names of local HOA presidents in their scams to gain the confidence of local residents. One such person fled when confronted by a 7260 board member.
A common scam is when teenagers represent that they are home schooled and are trying to earn a trip to Italy or that they need to fulfill their public speaking requirement or that they were helped by Officer XXX at the LAPD. They will try to get you to sponsor them with magazine subscriptions or the like.
Recently, a local elderly resident was distracted by one person at the door while their partner entered the house and attempted to steal valuables. In yet another case, a fake badge was used to gain entry to check for a "water leak." The latter resulted in $2,000 being stolen.
PLEASE do not invite strangers into your home. If someone shows up unexpectedly from a City agency, please confirm their identity with the City BEFORE letting the person onto your property or into your home.
